Micah Motenko, originally from the Boston area, is the lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and keyboardist of Motenko, but he’s first to admit it’s all a band affair. The Austin, Texas-based quartet formed in early 2018, and it’s a band of brothers whose day gigs are hired gun musicians. Together, they play a fresh but authentic blend of 1960s and 1970s soul, funk, and New Orleans inspired boogie. Until March, Motenko held a nearly 2 year long Wednesday night residency at the east Austin venue Stay Gold.
Featuring guitarist Cat Clemons III, bassist Josh Flowers, and drummer James Gwyn, the quartet mines the interlocking ensemble mindset blueprinted by the great rhythm bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s such as The Meters, Booker T. and The MGs, and the great Motown pit musicians. The band’s musicality is also informed by modern masters of soul such as producer J. Dilla, and the Soulquarians, the brilliant neo-soul collective the featured and worked with artists such as D’ Angelo, The Roots, Slum Village, and Erykah Badu.
Self described as “groove-driven soul music”, Motenko’s eponymous 2020 EP is a chronological narrative inspired by a transformative time in Micah’s life.

At the age of 19, he started teaching privately while also studying jazz guitar at The University of North Texas, and went on to receive an MA from Berklee College of Music. Doppel is a groove-based jazz band from Austin Texas. Their tumescent, melody-rich mandalas of sound feed adventure to the spirit, as one travels through the liminal landscapes of debut full-length Ensō(2020). DOPPEL is the German word for “Double,” and their unique and captivating sound is driven by improvisation-based compositions and their live use of looping. The duo is Jan Flemming on accordion, keyboards, and synths from Cologne, Germany, and drummer/percussionist Michael Longoria from McAllen, TX (the Rio Grande Valley).
